Redesign "Nooie 360 Cam" App feature of “Camera Pan and Tilt Controlling”.

About Nooie

"Nooie" is a company that produces smart home products which can be controlled through the "nooie" app.
These products include cameras, doorbells, plugs, lights, and more.

Background

We have received numerous customer complaints about the "Nooie 360 Cam" App feature of “Camera Pan and Tilt Controlling”.
The main issue is that users cannot precisely control the camera rotation by using the gesture.

Define Problems from Empathy Map

- The gesture for pan and tilt is not understood by users.

- In landscape mode, users must use both hands to control the camera.

- Users are unable to pan and tilt in their desired direction.

Conclusion form Competitive Audit

- Develop a control pad for users who are unfamiliar with gesture control.

- Include direction arrow icons on the control pad.

- Ensure that the control pad can be operated with one hand in both portrait and landscape mode.

- Preserve the gesture control feature for existing users.

Design Draft

The design draft refers to three principles.

- “Thumb-driven Design”

- “Button Size and Spacing Standard”

- “Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)”

Usability Testing

Objectives:

To ensure that users choose to control their phones with one hand in landscape mode.

Participants:

- Number of Testers: 40 individuals

- Gender: 40% male, 60% female

- Age Range: 25-40 years old (70%), 40-45 years old (30%)

Procedures:

These are the two user testing interfaces, and both will be tested on an iPhone 12 Pro.

- Control buttons are placed in the bottom left corner.

- Control buttons are placed in the center and on the edges.

Questionnaire Survey:

- Why did you choose this interface?

- Do you have any suggestions about how to improve the interface you chose?

Main Metric:

Preference Ratio:
The proportion of participants who choose one of the interfaces should be at least 70%.

Other Observation form Testing Report

- Gender, age, and holding habits have no positive correlation on the choices of interfaces.

- 26.1% of participants proposed to add a joystick design on the control pad, and 90.9% of proposers’ gender is male.

Final Design

- According to the report, we determined to place the control pad in the bottom left corner in the landscape mode.

- Although we didn't find any joystick design from competitors, we figured we could give it a shot.
Since users can control the pad by moving their finger and also clicking. Additionally, users can keep their eyes on video and focused on the action.
